In the wonderful area of Livadi, 2 km north of the city of Aegina, visitors can admire the house of the renowned Greek writer and philosopher Nikos Kazantzakis. One of the most distinguished and prolific authors of his generation and highly praised for his work and contribution, Kazantzakis stayed in Aegina for major periods of his life, especially during the German occupation.
The author first visited Aegina in the 1920’s and fell in love with the light and the charming landscape. In 1935 he bought an estate in Livadi and the house was erected in 1935, designed by the architect Vasilis Douras. Two-floored and minimal in style, it is built in accordance to the characteristic island style and has an inviting exterior. Kazantzakis and his wife Eleni stayed in their Aegina house for almost 10 years, until 1946 and during this time the writer produced major part of his work, including his version of Odyssey. Many fellow authors and artists would visit this house frequently to exchange ideas and enjoy the couple’s hospitality.
The house of Nikos Kazantzakis is not open to the public, however, you can admire it during a walk to the small cape of Plakakia, which offers magnificent to the Saronic Gulf.
