Due to Aeginas close proximity to Athens, getting to the island is relatively easy.

CLOSEST AIRPORT

Athens International Airport, Eleftherios Venizelos, is the closest commercial airport to Aegina, located 25 km outside the centre of Athens.

Your Aegina ferry will depart from the Port of Piraeus close to Athens.

 

FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE PORT OF PIRAEUS

By Train:

There is direct transport by train from the Piraeus terminal at the airport to the port of Piraeus. The trip lasts 63 minutes. The ticket price is around 10 euros for a one way ticket and around 18 euros return. The trains leave every hour.

By Shuttle Bus:

The most economical way to reach the Port of Piraeus is to take shuttle bus. You will find the shuttle bus when you leave the arrivals hall. Take shuttle bus number X96. The bus departs approximately every 20 minutes, and stops several times along the way. The Port of Piraeus is the last stop. Tell the bus driver you are going to Aegina. Get off when you see the Port on your lefthand side. Enter Gate E8 which is the departure gate for all ferries leaving for Aegina and the other Saronic islands (Agistri, Methana, Poros, Hydra & Spetses).

 

The price of the ticket is € 6.00 and is valid for 24 hours. You may use the same ticket on the bus, trolley bus or the metro. Depending on the amount of traffic, the trip from the airport to Piraeus may take between 60 and 90 minutes. Buy your ticket at the small ticket office located next to the shuttle bus stop. Once inside the bus, validate your ticket in the orange machine.

By Taxi:

Should you prefer to take a taxi to the Port (to Gate E8), find the taxi queue next to Door 3 on the Arrivals Level. Taking a taxi is faster than the bus or train taking on average 45 minutes, and will cost you around € 50,00 (day rate).

By Rental Car:

You will find all major car rental companies at the airport. Booking in advance is recommended.

 

GETTING FROM THE PORT OF PIRAEUS TO AEGINA ISLAND

The Piraeus port is divided into various gates. All boats travelling to the Saronic islands of Aegina, Agistri, Methana, Poros, Hydra & Spetses depart from Gate E8 which is located on the east side of the port. The Ferries are lined up at one end of the quay and the high Speed vessels at the other end. There are connections from Piraeus to Aegina town, Agia Marina (summer months only) and Souvala (summer months only) on Aegina island.

The Aegina ferry takes approximately 40-75 minutes from start to finish depending on the type of ferry you choose.

You have two options for ferries to get from Athens to Aegina (Piraeus to Aegina). The first option is a really large car ferry which takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach Aegina, and costs around €8 per person each way. The second option is high-speed ferry which takes approximately 40 minutes and does not transport vehicles. It costs around €14 per person each way.

How to Buy a Ferry Ticket to Aegina:

Ferry tickets can be bought from ticket vendors at the quay. However it is recommended to purchase them online in advance to secure your seat and avoid long queues and waiting time at the port.

HOW TO GET TO YOUR ACCOMMODATION
On arrival in Aegina there are various options to get to your accommodation depending on whether you are staying in Aegina Town or elsewhere on the island.

By Foot:

Most accommodation in Aegina Town is within walking distance from the port.

By Taxi:

Upon arrival in Aegina town you will see the line of taxi’s just outside the port.

By Bus:

It is also possible to take the bus. A left turn as you disembark the ferry takes you east to the bus station (tel. 22970/22-787) on Plateia Ethneyersias.

By Hotel Pickup:

Some establishments offer transfers from the port. Enquire when you make your booking.
